“Seventy years ago a butcher came into our carpentry shop: he wanted a butcher block for his shop. Some time later another butcher came in, impressed by the product he had seen from his colleague….
That’s how I realised it was a ‘must do’ job. I always perfected it, I went so far as to make a butcher block connected internally with tie rods, which then became a single block. Then I started doing fairs. After the first fair, I’ve never run out of work.
In 1952 my company was born. I always believed in my product and, with passion, I made it and then patented it; now it is among the best on the market. But every day we go into the laboratory with the ambition to make it even better.
Our Story
The story of Mej is inevitably linked to the story of a family, the Fruttero family, and its way of understanding life and relationships, with others and with nature. Simplicity and love for beauty, amazement, and respect for the wonders of the earth and for the encounters with other people: this is how, for over 70 years, this story has continued to ‘feed’ and grow
a unique essence
As Andrea (our technical & quality manager and designer) always says: beauty and strength are not opposing forces, but a synergy. The interlocking of the dowels, the tenacity of the steel tie rods, and the harmony of tone and grain form a single essence — one that becomes indissoluble in Mej’s vigorous embrace.
select the best wood
It’s in nature that we find our materials, and it’s thanks to nature that our products are strong, wholesome, and long-lasting.
As Michele always says: every tree has a story and unique gifts that must be listened to, protected, and respected.
Selecting the best wood for our butcher blocks begins with a responsible and respectful choice — one that honors nature.
It’s a sustainable path, a way to restore balance to something that was born in balance: the relationship between humankind and the earth.
We’ve always loved walking through the forest, listening to its sounds, and patiently awaiting Michele’s verdict: “This one is perfect!”
A smile and a gentle touch on the bark, as if to ask permission and promise respect.
